August is here! What are you up to?

Hey Firecrackers!

Can you believe it’s August already? I remember it being the first week of June, and now here we are. Halloween is just around the corner, what do you think? Is it too soon to put my decorations up? Ok, I’ll hold back and enjoy what’s left of the summer- you should too!

Before I jump into what’s going on in the Firecracker world, let me tell you about this cool new journey I’m on. I’ve recently moved up from Writing Department team member to the head of the Writing Department. Cool stuff! It’s a big honour being trusted to hold that position, so I hope I can do it justice. We’re already talking about all the different things we’d like to see come out of the Writing Department (department collabs/crossovers, more writing challenges & events, etc.) It’s an exciting time for sure!

Back over at the Firecracker Department we’ve got a lot going on. We just had our July Script Department reading, and we have an upcoming Igniting Social Justice Workshop happening August 10th! If you haven’t already, please check out our private members group on Facebook and subscribe to our newsletter to stay on top of what’s going on. We always give our core community premium access through those mediums, so it wouldn’t hurt to be a part of them.

Our Social Justice Workshop will be led by Sedina Fiati and Farah Merani with support from Jessica Nesis. This workshop will be one that everyone can participate in while we review systems of oppression (such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and others) while going over self directed learning and self care strategies. It’s a really important workshop that I think everyone should take part in, so remember to check our Facebook group for the Eventbrite link. It’s great to have the chance to discuss these things in a learning environment- come listen, learn, ask questions and participate in an open discussion. When is it a better time to learn than now? We'll also be having another Social Justice Blog entry coming up soon, so I’m equally as excited for that as well! It’s been great to see the Social Justice Department grow into what it is now- between our community events, blog posts and future plans I just know we’ll get you excited for the revolution.

I haven’t touched upon this in a blog entry, but I will now! Lisel Lafferty (member of the Script Department) holds free script & story consulting on Monday’s between 12pm-1pm PT/ 3pm-4pm ET. Lisel gives advice on anything story/script related- log lines, pitches, story spines, etc. I haven’t had the chance to attend any of these consulting events, but I’m sure as heck going to try! Let’s make a deal: August 9th we’ll attend Lisel’s consultation. Mark it in your calendars readers, let’s do this together!

Well, another blog wrapping up also means another month is just starting!

End of blog call to action:

  • Read that book you’ve been putting off

  • Take 5 minutes a day to stretch to one of your favourite songs

  • Eat something fun!

See you in September,

Fran 💥
